This is a terrible movie. Frank Marshall (Arachnophobia) demonstrates no control over story, actors, effects, or general presentation in this adaptation of a Michael Crichton novel about an expedition into deep, dark Africa that runs into an unknown race of killer apes. The big monkeys attack and attack and attack and have to be fought off with machine guns and lasers–that’s pretty much the story, except there’s probably an even better one behind “fourth Ghostbuster” Ernie Hudson’s bizarre decision to speak with a British accent. While Marshall wants us to root for the human characters, they’re all so obnoxious and unbelievable you can’t help but feel lousy for the poor apes when they get chopped to bits just for defending their homes against these twerps. If you’re not feeling enough environmentalist ire these days, watch this and get angry. –Tom Keogh

Wayne plays a career gunfighter in the autumn of his life, trying to hang up his pistols after he discovers he’s dying of cancer. Boarding in the house of an attractive widow (Lauren Bacall) and her son (Ron Howard), Wayne’s character opts for peace in his final days but is dogged by his reputation when a handful of killers seeks him out for a final fight. Howard is fine as a fatherless boy who needs the strong mentor the hero represents, and James Stewart–who costarred with Wayne in the great Man Who Shot Liberty Valance–plays the doctor who gives the big man the bad news. Don Siegel (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) thoughtfully directs a very special and sensitive production. –Tom Keogh

Produced in a time when films were both literally and figuratively black and white, Made for Each Other was uniqu in its effective blending of the comedic, the dramatic, and, as perhaps some would insensitively say, the melodramatic. Beautiful Carole Lombard and likeable James Stewart are Jane and John Mason, a couple who meet, fall madly in love, marry, and quickly have a baby. But while they–and the audience–are confident that they are meant for each other, life intercedes and the couple must meet with disapproving in-laws, job stress, financial challenges and, finally, a devastating illness.

Lombard and Stewart–and the genuinely good people they portray–are utterly compelling and charming. Say yawningly what you will about tradition, but the Masons’ is a path many, if not most, go down. And unlike the wonderful but wholly fantasy world of peer Preston Sturges, director John Cromwell’s universe is, like real life, full of ups and downs. It’s an accessible, sensitive portrayal. He gives the audience characters they want to see succeed, and to see stay together in the process. It may be a tale of triumph of the human spirit, but its ultimate sentiment–one that celebrates the kindness of strangers–is thoroughly sweet, though in no way saccharine.

Look for a great supporting cast, including a blustery Charles Coburn as John Mason’s boss, and Lucile Watson as Mason’s interfering mother. –N.F. Mendoza
